Ten, Który Czuwa w Mroku

Art Quilts

Kolorowe nici tworzą misternie pikowane skrzydła przypominające jednocześnie ćmę, magiczny amulet i koronkową mandalę.

Czasem wystarczy chwila skupienia, by dostrzec strażnika czuwającego w mroku.

He Who Watches in the Darkness

When the European Quilt Association announced the “Fantastic World of Insects” challenge, I immediately thought about creating something more than just an image of an insect. I wanted to tell the story of a creature belonging to a world of imagination, a world filled with mystery, silence, and the glow of the night.

Thus, “He Who Watches in the Darkness” was born.

The piece was created entirely on black fabric. The deep black background became the space from which a fantastic nocturnal guardian emerges. Colourful threads form intricately quilted wings that simultaneously evoke a moth, a magical amulet, and a lace mandala. Every line was quilted on a longarm machine, and the density of the stitching made it possible to build the composition using only thread and light.

At the centre of the artwork is a mysterious insect with wide-spread wings. Its form is enriched with ornaments inspired by lace, traditional paper-cut designs, and mandalas. The light elements surrounding the figure create a luminous halo, emphasising the symbolic role of this guardian of the night.

Hand-sewn beads complement the quilting. They gently reflect the light, causing the artwork to change its appearance depending on the viewing angle. Thanks to them, “He Who Watches in the Darkness” gains an additional dimension, as if it were truly observing its surroundings from the shadows.

One of the greatest joys for me was the debut of this piece at the 31st Carrefour Européen du Patchwork exhibition in Alsace, where it was presented as part of the international European Quilt Association challenge “Fantastic World of Insects.” It is always a special feeling to see my work exhibited alongside artists from different countries and to be part of a project that demonstrates how many diverse interpretations can emerge from the same theme.

For me, this artwork is a story about beauty hidden within darkness. It reminds us that not everything needs to be immediately visible to be captivating. Sometimes, all it takes is a moment of quiet attention to notice the guardian watching in the darkness.
