This week’s entry in Project Quilting was inspired by a particular quilt called „The Crazy Quilt”. You can read about the history of its formation here.
This is something completely new for me. I have never had the opportunity to sew a quilt like this before. To be honest, I think it scares me a little. Maybe because I don’t really like working with fabrics other than cotton, or maybe because of the complete and utter chaos that occurs in these quilts. I really admire all of the people that can create these works. Their creativity and patience is amazing. The quilts are beautiful and I really like them very, very much, but it’s just not my cup of tea.
Until now. I have to face this challenge head-on.
It was very difficult for me to find the right fabrics that would be suitable to create a „crazy quilt.” Cotton reings supreme in my home. A long time ago I received samples of some suede imitation pieces that ended up saving me.
Hurray! I was able to complete my challenge. I decided to use them to make a bookmark.
I found an appropriate block in the Electric Quilt 8 digital library, printed it out several times, and cut them out. Before gluing, I turned the blocks in differect directions to give off the impression that each one is different. I then glued them all together. The pattern for my bookmark was ready to go.
I prepared a strip of double-sided, non-woven fabric and glued a piece of cotton fabric to it. I removed the paper and fastened it with pins to the previously prepared pattern. Thanks to the layer of interlining on top, the cut pieces couldn’t move around.
I then started cutting out all the individual pieces from the lining.
I arranged them on the fusible interfacing, one by one.
In each block section I changed the color of the copied pieces.
I didn’t plan on sewing them with a sewing machine, everything was supposed to be done by hand.
The first stage is finished.
It turned out very nice.
Now for the most difficult part, playing around with decorating it. For this I used a colorful mouline from DMC, (I had some left-overs from the time when I did embroidery) and beads that I had purchased recently that I used to create the „Coral Fantasy.” You can read about it here.
In beginning I wanted to machine the bookmark with a zigzag stitch and finish it like this, but I decided that since everything is being done by hand, then the finishing must also be done manually.
Finished. I like it. Who knows, maybe I’ll try this again someday, I just need to get rid of the rabbits first. Fur is everywhere.
