Creating unique works of art from wood is one of the most satisfying and creative hobbies. Carving a face in wood can be particularly challenging but also very rewarding. However, before we start, we must understand that the human face has characteristic features that are worth knowing. If you observe the human face, one can notice that it is roughly divided into three parts: from the hairline to the eyebrows, from the eyebrows to the bottom of the nose, and from the bottom of the nose to the lower part of the jaw.
We must remember that the hairline is not at the top of the head. The top of the skull is slightly higher than the hairline. It is also important to note that the ear, when viewed in profile (from the side), starts roughly halfway between the front of the forehead and the back of the head.
This is exactly what Maria taught us in the sculpture classes, and we had to use this knowledge when creating our clay head. You might be wondering why we used clay and not wood right away? Clay is a very good material for learning. As long as it hasn’t dried, it can be shaped multiple times, unlike wood.
This is how my first clay head was created, which evolved during the photo session. Initially, it was a man. However, after looking at the photos, I felt that something was missing (and it wasn’t hair). That’s how the horns were created. But is this really the devil?
