Today, I want to share my latest creation, which was inspired by a vector image created by Ewgenia Mużitowa. The image captivated me with its vibrant colors.
I named it the “Green Magpie” because it reminds me so much of the bird. The green magpie bird is mainly found in Southeast Asia. In folklore and symbolism, it represents beauty, happiness, intelligence, harmony with nature, freedom, and a connection to the spiritual realm. Its colorful appearance and graceful movements make it an object of admiration and inspiration for many artists.
To create this artwork, I used a technique called “raw appliqué.” This involves layering pieces of fabric using double-sided adhesive, non-woven fabric. The interlining prevents the fabrics from fraying and holds them together.
I began by tracing the individual parts of the bird onto the double-sided fusible interfacing.
As you can see in the photos below, the image was constructed from many pieces of fabric, carefully cut with scissors.
I personally dyed all the fabrics used in this work.
Once the artwork was complete, I peeled it off the baking paper and transferred it onto the chosen background.
Next came the quilting process. I used various threads to add texture to my bird. The quilting was done freehand to achieve interesting effects.
Finally, I embellished the magpie with beads in different colors.
