Today I want to share with you my passion for Romanian lace and tell you about my doily project, which started over 20 years ago. Yes, you read that right! It all started when I came across a beautiful doily pattern in the magazine ‘Anna,’ in 1998. I was fascinated by the pattern and wanted to make it, but unfortunately I couldn’t find the right materials in Poland. I looked everywhere, called different stores, but to no avail. I gave up on the idea and forgot about the doily.
But fate had other plans! This year, during Romanian lace classes at the University of Folk Arts and Crafts, I learned how to make string, which is the basis of this technique. This string is attached to a pattern and connected with a needle, creating a mesh that is then filled with various stitches. And you know what? When I started making the string, I remembered that doily from 1998! I thought it was the perfect opportunity to try making it with Romanian lace. Of course, I had to change the pattern a bit and use a different material, but the effect will be very similar to the original.
I won’t lie, it’s a very time-consuming task. The string is made of thin cordon and a 1.25 mm crochet hook, so you need a lot of patience and precision. For now, I only have part of the string ready, which I have already attached to the pattern. There is still a lot of work ahead of me to fill in the empty spaces with a needle and cord. But I’m full of enthusiasm and I can’t wait to show you the finished doily. It will be my little work of art!
