Hi everyone! I feel like I’ve been a bit behind in showing what I’ve been sewing lately. Maybe it’s because I’m busy with a new project that I’m working on at the moment. I know for sure that it is not the weather, it has not been spoiling me this year. Everywhere they write about beautiful weather, dry days, high temperatures, and in Podkarpacie it’s cold, ugly, and raining.
To make me feel better I made a sunflower which I named “Memory of summer”. It reminds me of warm and sunny days.
Why did I give it that name? Because when I look at it, I feel the sun. Sun that warms my face and gives me energy. Sun, that inspires me to create a new project. Sun, that symbolizes life and joy. The sunflower is for me a memory of summer, that I can keep right next to me always.
The project is based on a photo Olga Yastremska.
I used sharp appliqué to create this image. This is a technique that involves overlapping pieces of fabric glued with double-sided adhesive non-woven fabric. It prevents the fabric from fraying. All the fabrics used were hand dyed by me.
The biggest challenge of this project was to match the background. I did not want it to dominate the sunflower, but I wanted it to be exceptional. After many attempts I finally got what I liked. The background has subtle color transitions and matches the mood of the image.
Quilting is my favorite part of every project. It is, as always, a bit of a challenge.
This time I had to interrupt another project on my long arm, in order to start working on the sunflower because I just couldn’t wait to finish it.
Everything was going well until the tension spring in my long arm machine broke. There was lots of crying, there were lots of stress and there was my wonderful husband who quickly dealt with the problem and replaced the spring from another Bernina machine. Thanks to him, I was able to finish quilting without major complications. I am very grateful to him for his help and support.
After quilting, all I had to do was stretch the work onto the frame and admire the end result. I’m very proud of this project and I hope you like it too.
