This time Trish went all out and wrote: “This is this week’s challenge: make anything you can imagine – but do not use square shapes… This means you can work with rectangles, hexagons, diamonds, equilateral triangles, circles, braids and a whole universe of irregular shapes. You can even create a landscape. But whatever you do, don’t make your project square. And don’t sew a square!” That’s the instruction on the page for Season 14 of Project QUILTING.
For me, it’s a fantastic challenge. I immediately came up with the idea of sewing an Easter card. I know, I know – Easter is still far away, but this is the only moment when I have a bit of free time.
Of course, paper design first, that I printed out. I wanted the card to be 19,5 cm. This time, instead of a rectangle, it will be in the shape of an egg.
Next, I copied the individual elements onto double sided fusible web. I’m so glad someone invented it.
I cut them out and started to look for scraps, that will fit my project.
For the egg, I chose a hand dyed fabric with a marbled pattern.
For the inside, I put a thin cotton batting and glued an egg on it. For the back, I used a stiff non-woven fabric with glue. I glued two layers of fleece, one on top of the other, to the bottom of my batting. This made my egg stiff.
I evened out my egg and stitched with a zig-zag, with Isacord threads. Additionally, I also used a decorating stich that is in my sewing machine.
Then I moved on to the flowers. I placed the individual parts on baking paper and glued them.
I cut out the center of my little flower from the fabric into small rectangles.
I transferred my little flowers onto the egg and glued them on.
I remembered to protect the parts protruding from behind the egg by gluing fabrics in the right color.
I painted the back side with ball pen.
I remember when my children brought home colored Easter eggs from school. So, I wanted my egg to look like it was colored by a child.
While taking pictures, I noticed that if I would have glued an eye on an Easter egg, a chicken would come out.
I really like the end result and there are no squares anywhere. Neither in front nor back.
