I’m just about past the halfway point of sesion 14th of Project QUILTING! Unbelievable how fast time flies.
“Innovative Project”, the title of the challenge, this time it sounds crazy to me, but thanks to this I was able to work on a project that I have been dreaming about for months. This week Trish wants to see project inspired by books that I have read. They can be books from your childhood or books for adults.
I have some books in mind, books that I keep returning to and reading a few times. These are books by Tone Finnanger. I know, I know. These are not the typical books you would usually read, but they are special to me.
This is one of the books I own and will be participating in the challenge. On the cover you can see a bug that I decided to sew.
First, I copied all the parts of my bug onto some freezer paper. I did it twice because I decided that I would sew two bugs. I didn’t want to peel and stick the paper. Was it faster? I don’t know. Sometimes people come up with something and decide to stick to this idea even though it is not quite so smart.
I cut every element out. I chose the fabrics and glued individual elements to them.
Additionally, I cut strips, 30×8 cm, and ironed them on with the back side towards the center.
Then, I turned it around and sewed it. I turned it the right side out again and sewed the ends together. This will be our decorative frill collar. (I admit, I do not have the individual stages of creating this part, I forgot to take pictures).
Next, I started working on the wings. I found a soft and thin cotton batting in white. I put it under the fabric with the wings and sewed around the edges of the freezer paper.
While sewing it, I had to remember to leave a small opening so that I could turn my wings inside out.
I straightened it out, turned it right side out and sewed the opening closed. Then I stitched everything with a walking foot.
In addition, I decorated my wings with beads that I sewed along the edge.
On the “face” side of the fabric, I glued double sided fusible web, cut it out, and glued it to the heads of my bugs.
I stitched straight.
I folded the two fabric’s right sides together, added some batting and sewed along the edges of the freezer paper. I left another small opening to be able to turn it right side out.
After turning and lightly ironing, I drew my bugs some eyes. I did it with a black permanent marker.
I added some antennae, made out of wires, which I pushed through the head and twisted with a pen.
I decorated the ends of the antennae using buttons with a butterfly motif.
I stuffed it with silicone pellets and sewed it up.
I basted the previously prepared frill collars and put them around the bugs’ necks. Which I sewed.
The bugs were almost ready.
I still had to sew on the wings. They should have been measured beforehand.
I invited my bugs for photo shoot. And I have to come up with some names for them.
They’re on the shelf now. Every time I pass them by, I smile and remember my favorite books.
