Last January 2022, I too, entered a sewing game, which was to sew a tondo. According to Wikipedia the word “tondo” comes from Italian, which means a plate, a circle, so the project must be round. The challenge seemed very interesting to me because I had never sewed anything in that shape before.
This time I was inspired by a spiral design, which I have on my “to do” list. And who would be best to make a template for me if not a retired builder, Mr. Husband.
For this project I selected a cotton panel Brite Large Flower by Timeless Treasures from Pani Szpilka.
I used the raw edge applique.
On the back side of the panel, with the interlining already on, Mr. Husband drew a template.
I wanted the height of the elements to be 1 inch and the distance between them to be ¼ inch.
Now it was time to trim the pieces, which was a bit like slicing a pizza, and carefully arranging the pieces on the background fabric.
As you can see, I numbered the elements so as not to get confused and mess up the pattern.
The next step was quilting everything on the long arm. I wanted to emphasize the shape of the flower. I used multicolor threads.
My tondo has a diameter of 88 cm.
