Over a year ago, my friend Sylwia, was given many pairs of jeans from someone who was closing down their store. Some of them were damaged and so he wanted to throw them away. Thanks to her quick response, the pants found a place in her home and not in the dumpster. The wonderful girl shared with me her treasures, so I thank her very much.
So, they stayed quietly in my closet, waiting for me to do something with them. There were many ideas but never enough time, so they laid there, waiting.
Unfortunately, time ran out and I had to use them. I decided to change upholstery on my dining room chairs. I did not want anything fancy. Simplicity was the key. I cut the jeans into squares and rectangles in different sizes, which were to be all sewn together.
When the whole operation was finished (it took the whole day), I measured the size of the seat.
I cut out the background fabric, on which I spread a double-sided fusible web on (the misty kind) and started to arrange the cut pieces.
I arranged them so that they overlapped each other a few millimeters, and then I gave it a good press with an iron. If there was any missing element or missed dimension, I added it during the process.
When the whole thing was ready (I needed six pieces) I started sewing the denim pieces.
I chose the satin stitch for this operation.
This is how the material was created that was to serve as the upholstery for my dining room chairs.
Isn’t that weird that to create fabric, you have to first cut the fabric.
Now, it was time to play the part of an upholsterer and ta-dah! My chair is ready.
All six chairs turned out fantastic.
But this is not the end. I got for it. I decided to make a couch cover.
Since I already have all these denim squares and rectangles, I had to use them. This time I decided to use my long- arm for the sewing.
I stretched out a thin fabric and arranged my denim pieces over it, (remembering to overlap the pieces a few millimeters).
When I like the arrangement, I sewed it on long arm.
When all the pieces were sewn on, I took off the entire piece from my long-arm and then additionally stitched them with a zigzag stich. Next, I put it back on the long-arm, added some backing to it, and quilted it.
The couch cover looks fantastic, I am so delighted. It fits perfectly with my chairs.
