Sixth Challenge- Project Quilting

“All good things come to an end”- I kept repeating this to myself, taking part in this year’s last challenge, organized by Kim Lapacek. This time it is “Flying Geese.”

I had two options – a cosmetics bag (that I actually need) or a pillow with a cotton panel with a sewing machine on it, something that I have dreaming about for several years now but could never find the time to make it. I chose the pillow.

The cosmetics bag can wait.

This is the panel.

The idea was to put the panel in the center of the pillow and have “flying geese” surround it. It’s nothing spectacularly creative but for me it was a new experience. Of course, I have sewed “flying geese” before, but I have never designed a pillow with this motif.

I took a large sheet of paper and drew a square (40×40 cm) on it. This was supposed to be the size of my pillow, plus seam allowance (1 cm on each side).

In the center of the paper sheet, I put the panel on and drew the width of my “flying geese.”

Then I divided the paper sheet into eight equal parts (these are to be my geese).

I was very excited about this project. This was the first time that I was doing this on a regular paper sheet. It was important for me not to make any mistakes (I admit, I am not a math genius).

Next, I cut the paper into sections (like in the “Paper Piecing” method) and used the PP.

First, I sewed the corner blocks of the pillow.

These are the four corner blocks. Then I started on my “flying geese.”

I used my hand dyed fabrics and PP method.

I have to recommend this great ruler, Add-A-Quarter Plus, I dedicated it to using templates or sewing using the PP method. After creating templates, using this ruler, I can add a typical ¼” seam stock to any straight edge. I bought mine at the “Pani Szpilka”online store.
