Week 1
According to the Greeks, the OKEANOS was probably the oldest of the sea deities-he personified the river flowing over the world.
I have been looking for a name for my quilt for a long time now, but everything I came up with seemed so trivial. I know that some people might think that it does not quite fit, because the light house occupies a large area of the image. But for me it is of secondary importance. I devoted most of my time to make the ocean and I want to make it stand out.
From the very beginning, when I was creating the drawing, I knew that this would be a difficult project. I must admit that there were even moments when I had had enough of it. I sat in the corner of my room and cried like a baby. Sometimes I wanted to give up and throw it all to hell, but that would mean I failed, and I hated that even more. It bothers me.
But now with the hardship behind us I can tell you how this miraculous project came to life.
The quilt is based on a photograph, which spoke to me the moment I saw it. First, I created the project on a tablet then transferred it into the computer and printed it out in two versions (one version was the basic drawing and the other was its mirror image). On the computer the drawing seemed to look rather big, but when the print showed up, I realized that it was just my imagination.
Now that I am finished, I can tell you that this project contains over a thousand pieces cut by hand.
When the plan was ready, I needed to gather all the fabrics I was planning to use. I used a cotton fabric available in fabric stores and my own hand dyed fabrics.
Of course, I had more fabrics, but these look genuinely nice so I must show them off. I was finally able to accomplish a nice shade of gray.
One of these beauties served as a background for the sky. The sky was a very time-consuming process, created with the help of felting needle and the worsted wool. I did not quite like the right-side effect, but when I turned the sky to the left, it looked much better and I knew I would not have to start the whole process from the beginning. The sky came out great.
This time I had a helper that demanded a photo.
After felting with a needle and then with the help of a sewing machine, the sky was ready.
The birds were glued and that how the first week of my struggle was ended.
