October was a highly creative month for me when three different projects got a new life in my studio. I already told you about “The destiny” so I tell you about my parrot now.
I was inspired to create this quit by the book “Point, Click, Quilt” by Susan Blubaker Knapp. The author in her book presented her projects and includes free patterns. Among them I found the parrots which I got a crush on.
Since I do not like copy other quilters projects, I decided to sew my own. For a long time, I was looking for the right photo online, and I was close to give up until one day I saw my dream parrot.
I did not save many pictures that would show the entire process of creating that quilt. I used exactly the same method when sewing “The Destiny”. This means, I drew the design in Corel, printed on transfer paper, copy on double sided fusible web, and cut out.
Next, I hand dyed my fabrics, I love that process because the final result always surprises me. So, how it was with the background for my parrot. It came up amazing.
Then I glued the double-sided fusible web into the fabrics and cut elements. At the end it was the most important job, laying the elements according to a specific order on the fabric and gave them a good press.
This time did not have to bother with the big iron. I got a microscopic patchwork iron.
I was not really happy with it because the heating and gluing process took a long time, but still greatly improved my work.
I arranged tiny pieces under tracing paper with the help of tweezers.
The beak was painted with gray acrylic paint, it was very experimental, and I was not happy with that, but it could not be undone.
Before quilting, the parrot/sandwich was pinned with the foam and the bottom with safety pins.
I followed the quilting according to Susan’s technique, but as my experience was not big at that time so it did not come up as I planned. I sewed in a black frame and thank to this the parrot looks much better.
