You certainly know by now how much I love the OBW method. This was love at first sight when I first learned the method. My first OBW was “Shuriken”, but it was actually not the one that stole my heart. I only discovered the possibilities of this method while working with printed panels. That was how “Ognik” was created.
Since then, I am looking for interesting panels like a maniac. Of course, not all panels are suitable for this method. How do I know that? That’s a very good question. I just feel it, I trust my intuition.
Coming back to today’s post title, “Gaia” this is exactly the kind of panel that when I saw it, I knew it would be perfect for OBW. The panel is based on one of Josephine Wall’s paintings.
I started sewing it a year ago, then I stopped, and it lay there quietly, waiting in a box, moved from one corner of the room to another one. I promised myself that I would finish it, but I didn’t yet know when that would be. To sew such a piece, I needed some inspiration.
I got some wind beneath my wings thanks to the PPM QUILT SHOW.
If you’re not familiar with OBW, you can read about how “Forest” was created. Six panels were cut and sewn together to form hexagons. The seventh panel was pinned onto my closet sliding doors. This is where I arranged my OBW.
Next, I put all the blocks on my table. I try to group them by colors. I have to see them all, even if it’s just a half.
When all hexagons are on the table, the fun of arranging on the door begins.
A wooden step stool is a must have gadget in my studio.
Once the hexagons are in order, I leave them alone for a day or two. I do not sew them yet, instead I often sit in the armchair and look at the work. It turns out that I often make changes to the arrangement.
When I am positive that this layout is the best, I start sewing the hexagons together. First, I sew them vertically, making stripes, and then the resulting stripes are joined together.
When the hexagons are sewed together and ironed, I take the panel of the door and place it on the table. I pin the whole thing on the panel and sew it by hand.
Next, I have to work on preparing the back of my art quilt. Sometimes I like experimenting with dyes. I have to admit it came out fine, I even became emotional seeing final effect.
Now it is time to stretch everything on to the long arm – the top, the batting, and the back.
Quilting time – this also does not happen right away. I give myself a few days to think about it.
In this particular project I planned to decorate it with beads.
I did not count how many beads I stitched into this; it took a while. It even happened that I removed many beads that were already stitched in because I did not like the effect. With beads I often fall into a trance when I start sewing them on, and then it turns out that I overdid it.
