A long, long time ago I saw on internet an interesting quilt.  Sewn and quilted in extremely specific way. Maybe it had a name which I cannot recall in this moment. I decided to do something that would look alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All kinds of flowers and branches became too popular, so how about butterflies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First the project. How am I supposed to get a butterfly that would fit my vision, it seems impossible? I need to improvise. Maybe a half on a butterfly? And that looks easier. I found it. I love photo banks; they give me so many options.<\/p>\n\n\n

OK, I already have a half of the butterfly, now I must copy the other half. Drawing in Corel went quick. Next, they need to be copied and make them in mirror image. Fine, I already got two, I joined them, drew the body and my butterfly was ready.<\/p>\n\n\n

Now I had to duplicate them and make it of different sizes, and then arrange them on previously drawn square. The square was to be in final size.  <\/p>\n\n\n

My project was ready. It had to be printed out. I used transparent carbon paper instead of regular paper. I joined all the fragments into one piece. And found the right background fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, I planned what parts were supposed to be cut out, and what parts were supposed to be drawn and I went to work. First all the pieces were copied on a double-sided fusible web and glue on previously hand dyed fabrics and cut out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I put the tracing paper on a selected fabric, then I turned it on the other side, pinned in ( only the corners), to keep it in place and started to put all the butterfly pieces according to the design, next glue them with the help of the hot iron. This part was easy. The bigger problem for me was to copy the rest of the other part of the butterflies, which were supposed to be filled as a contour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And here my elementary school time come back to me. Butterfly contour, on the left side of the carbon paper I countered again with a pencil and then put it back in the same spot as before. Next, I did the same but on the other side. Why? The reflection reflected on the fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I could sit by my sewing machine. A little Bernina was able to handle that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Butterflies glued and quilted. I made a mistake because out of experience. It was that I used a very fluffy polyester batting.  After quilting it looked bad.<\/p>\n\n\n

As you can see in the picture, I wanted a half of the butterfly to be unfinished, but not quite so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The missing fragments were quilted after previously copied contours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a long time that quilt hung up in my son\u2019s bedroom but for some reason its view was annoying. It looked cheap. If something looks bad I either fix it or put it into a closed. I could not stand it. I had to make some changes. He went under the knife. I cut the contours of butterflies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now it looks much better and makes me feel better in rainy days.<\/p>\n\n\n
