On March 6th, 2021, the post-competition exhibition \u201eThe Third Dimension of Patchwork\u201d was opened to the public. I wrote about the competition here<\/a>. I made a four- panel screen for the competition.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the results? I won in the \u201eHome Decor\u201d category. Hurray !<\/p>\n\n\n

Now I can finally tell you how I made it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pictures shown below come from four panels and are applied as needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, as usual, I started with a sketch. All sorts of different coloring pages make for a very good theme to create something unique.<\/p>\n\n\n

When my sketch was printed out, I re-drew it onto double sided fusible web.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, I copied the pattern on the front of the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n

Then I turned it upside down and lit it up from the bottom so I could redraw the pattern. I numbered everything, cut it out, and sorted it all into pairs. Why in pairs ? My screen was supposed to have the same front and back, so I planned the same colors for both. For this reason, when I glued the individual pieces, I did not have to look for them beacouse they were sorted in pairs. Below is a picture of what it looks like before sorting.<\/p>\n\n\n

Next, I started the gluing process. The main fabric, that was to serve as the filling and background was a sparse cotton. I chose it beacause in my vision it was supposed to let light through it subtly.<\/p>\n\n\n

When I was gluing the individual pieces I had to be aware of the order in which they were supposed to be arranged. I wanted the fabrics of the pattern to overlap each other. Thanks to this I was able to correct any imperfect drawing or poor cutting of the individual pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n

When the right side of the panel was ready I removed the paper pattern. I turned the finished panel towards the table top.<\/p>\n\n\n

I turned the light on in my special table, which I like to call the \u201ebig magic box,\u201d  and re-glued the parts one by one.<\/p>\n\n\n

The color wheel was my guide when choosing colors for my screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Green was the main color.<\/p>\n\n\n

I wanted the colors to flow smoothly from one panel to another to form one piece. However, this was difficult to achieve when using crazy self-dyed fabrics. For this reason, the screen came out to be very colorful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the panels were ready, I started quilting. I liked that I was working with one layer only.<\/p>\n\n\n

I used the same threads for the top and the bottom, so I had to change the bobbin frequently. It was only thanks to my friend Sylwia that I did not go insane.She gave me a lot of spools for my long-arm, so I could go wild with the colors.<\/p>\n\n\n

I quilted the background with meanders to give it an interesting texture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The colors of the fabric were very intense, which excluded any need for more decorative quilting. It was more important to me to connect everything together and that the screen would be durable.<\/p>\n\n\n

After the quilting was done, I trimmed the panels and started to think about how to frame them. When my frames were ready, I placed the panels in, stretched them, blocked them, and cut off any excess fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n

Next the hinges were attached. But that was not my job anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n
