You certainly know by now how much I love the OBW method. This was love at first sight when I first<\/em> learned the method. My first OBW was \u201cShuriken<\/a>\u201d, but it was actually not the one that stole my heart. I<\/em> only discovered the possibilities of this method while working with printed panels. That was how<\/em> \u201cOgnik<\/a>\u201d was created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, I am looking for interesting panels like a maniac. Of course, not all panels are suitable for this<\/em> method. How do I know that? That\u2019s a very good question. I just feel it, I trust my intuition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coming back to today\u2019s post title, \u201cGaia\u201d this is exactly the kind of panel that when I saw it, I knew it<\/em> would be perfect for OBW. The panel is based on one of Josephine Wall\u2019s paintings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I started sewing it a year ago, then I stopped, and it lay there quietly, waiting in a box, moved from one<\/em> corner of the room to another one. I promised myself that I would finish it, but I didn\u2019t yet know when<\/em> that would be. To sew such a piece, I needed some inspiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I got some wind beneath my wings thanks to the PPM QUILT SHOW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re not familiar with OBW, you can read about how \u201cForest<\/a>\u201d was created. Six panels were cut and<\/em> sewn together to form hexagons. The seventh panel was pinned onto my closet sliding doors. This is where I arranged my OBW.<\/p>\n\n\n

Next, I put all the blocks on my table. I try to group them by colors. I have to see them all, even if it\u2019s just<\/em> a half.<\/p>\n\n\n

When all hexagons are on the table, the fun of arranging on the door begins.<\/p>\n\n\n

A wooden step stool is a must have gadget in my studio.<\/p>\n\n\n

Once the hexagons are in order, I leave them alone for a day or two. I do not sew them yet, instead I<\/em> often sit in the armchair and look at the work. It turns out that I often make changes to the<\/em> arrangement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I am positive that this layout is the best, I start sewing the hexagons together. First, I sew them<\/em> vertically, making stripes, and then the resulting stripes are joined together.<\/p>\n\n\n

When the hexagons are sewed together and ironed, I take the panel of the door and place it on the<\/em> table. I pin the whole thing on the panel and sew it by hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, I have to work on preparing the back of my art quilt. Sometimes I like experimenting with dyes. I have to admit it came out fine, I even became emotional seeing final effect.<\/p>\n\n\n

Now it is time to stretch everything on to the long arm \u2013 the top, the batting, and the back.<\/p>\n\n\n

Quilting time \u2013 this also does not happen right away. I give myself a few days to think about it.<\/p>\n\n\n

In this particular project I planned to decorate it with beads.<\/p>\n\n\n

I did not count how many beads I stitched into this; it took a while. It even happened that I removed<\/em> many beads that were already stitched in because I did not like the effect. With beads I often fall into a<\/em> trance when I start sewing them on, and then it turns out that I overdid it.<\/p>\n\n\n
