Today I wanted to share with you my experiments working on embroidery, but in a little different way than the one we all know.  I was delighted watching Meredith Woolnough projects, she is well known as a sculptural embroiderer from Australia. I tried to combine her technique with some others that I have used so far, I mixed in a little bit of applique, a little bit of free motion quilting etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tools we need \u2013 embroidery hoop, good embroidery threads, disappearing ink marker, water soluble embroidery nonwoven stabilizer, warm water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I traced the pattern on the water-soluble stabilizer and got to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, I sewed along the edges the whole pattern because one day I left unfinished work over night, next morning the disappearing ink had  vanished. I had to start from the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n

Then I filled the empty spaces with threads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This leaf is 18 cm high and 14 cm wide, working time was approx. 2 hours. As you can see, I used three different greens that blended very nicely with each other.<\/p>\n\n\n

I soaked the finished leaf in some warm water and then spread it flat between two layers of baking paper. I couldn\u2019t wait, so I warmed it up slightly with an iron to speed  the drying process up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The water-soluble stabilizer stiffens the embroidered fabric without damaging the design, you can cut off any imperfections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now it is time to work on the center of my sunflower.<\/p>\n\n\n

My sunflower consists of three elements that I put on the baking paper and sewed through it merging them into one.<\/p>\n\n\n

I quilted the whole piece by free motion. I put green tulle under the leaves, and yellow fabric and some yellow tulle under the sunflower.<\/p>\n\n\n

Weakness – the drawback is that during the embroidering and rinsing, the element shrinks. You also have to be careful with what you use to apply the pattern to the interlining, because even a simple pencil stains the thread and does not rinse, so it looks ugly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
