Today I would like to share my adventure with FPP – Foundation Paper Piecing technique. This is patchwork sewing method in which we sew fabric to a paper template, creating beautiful and precise patterns. If you are not familiar with this technique, I recommend watching a few videos on YouTube, which will explain the method much better than I can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My challenge was Verushka Zarate\u2019s project – Queen of the Nile. This is a beautiful pattern depicting a woman\u2019s portrait in the Egyptian style, with a rich crown and ornaments.<\/p>\n\n\n

Verushka describes in detail in the instructions how to sew all of the individual elements and sections, but you still have to work hard to make everything go smoothly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I admit that it was a pretty long process for me to even dare to take on this project because it is quite large, 120 x120 cm (50\u201d x 50\u2019). It consists of 65 elements, 6 sections, 527 individual shapes and 17 colors. It really was quite an undertaking!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first step was to choose fabrics. I opened my closet and looked through my supplies, but I decided I needed more colors.  After a few days, I received a package from Panie Szpilka and could start playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next step was to print the pattern on foundation paper that has been waiting for this moment for quite some time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With such a large number of elements the good organization is essential. I cut out all the elements and arranged them on my design wall and arranged by sections.<\/p>\n\n\n

Then, using Verushka’s suggestions, I matched my colors by the color card. As you can see, each color has its own number.<\/p>\n\n\n

I also made my work more difficult that it should have been because I used two different colors under the same number, e.g. I didn’t want to repeat the same color on the face and the crown, so I increased the number of colors used from the suggested 17 to 20. It was a kind of test of my observation skills, but if I failed the first time, I sewed it again. I think we\u2019ve all experienced this before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And here is the finale of my FPP adventure. I am very proud of the effect and delighted with this technique. I recommend you try something like this if you like challenges and precision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

The quilting process I will have to postpone till spring, now it\u2019s time to focus on my next project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
