The One Block Wonder workshop that  I had the honor of leading at Quilt Fest Austria 2025 was more than just a meeting with students \u2013 it was a personal journey through challenges, passion, and creative discovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To prepare for the class, I designed a special panel I called \u201cWinged Dreams.\u201d That composition was meant to inspire, but also to challenge \u2013 and indeed, although I created it myself, it turned out to be demanding. The work was intense: long hours spent at my design wall, countless attempts to arrange the hexagons, and just as many moments of unpicking seams. Every piece had to find its perfect spot.<\/p>\n\n\n

To show my students the difference in visual effect, I sewed two quilts from the same panel \u2013 one with 3-inch blocks, the other one with 2-inch blocks. The same image, but entirely different final effect. Changing the scale altered the rhythm, the dynamics, and the overall impression of the composition. It was my first experience sewing the same project twice, it was fascinating and enlightening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The greatest challenge was quilting process. A broken leg didn\u2019t stop me \u2013 thanks to my longarm machine and sheer determination, I managed to finish the piece. Where there\u2019s a will, there\u2019s a way<\/strong> \u2013 that phrase took on a whole new meaning for me. I also added bead embellishments that subtly enhanced the spirit of \u201cWinged Dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This project is more than just a quilt \u2013 it\u2019s a story about the power of creativity, about pushing past personal limits, and about how, even in difficult moments, we can rise high\u2026 on the wings of dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
