On February 2009 I created the art quilt for the first time in my life. Till then I did not know that beautiful and fancy name.
To create an image, first I must see it. The most often I use online sources. This what happened in this case.
I found two magnolia flowers photos. I liked them very much. I wanted to have them too. I thought that I can sew them, why not. In those days I discovered US patchwork websites, that inspired me.
Next, I started collecting the fabrics. And it was so shocking for me when I realized I was not able to find the colors I needed to create my magnolias.
What was I supposed to do? If I cannot buy them, I must dye them.
I went to the store and got what I needed. Following the instructions, I was able to get a genuinely nice background and that was it. The rest of the dyeing process did not go well but I would tell you that story next time. Well, maybe to solve this problem I should paintbrush individual parts of the fabric.
And that was a hit. Of course, I could paint the entire image on the fabric, but I wanted it to consist multiple parts and create one big application just like those I saw on quilts made by US quilters.
So, I bought a thermophile (I use it instead of double-sided fusible web) on which I drew the individual parts of the pattern.
I cut and glued on white cotton fabric and I painted it. After it got dry, I cut out individual pieces of the image. I needed to be careful to arrange them to make it look like one piece.
I gave them a good press.
All the pieces were stitched with a decorative satin stich. Then I needed to quilt using multicolor threads to achieve depth to image. Finally, the frame and free motion quilting did the job.
It came up pretty well.
