Now, let me present my list of ten things that I found to be very helpful in my work but are typically not associated with sewing patchwork or quilts at all.
Aluminum bar, mine measures 5cmx100 cm (2″x39.5″) and is available for purchase at any OBI store, hardware store, etc. I use it to trim long pieces of fabric.
Weights, I found my relics in the attic. I use them to keep the fabric on the table so that it does not slip down.
Baking paper. I always iron my patchworks through baking paper. Based on my experience, I found out that the hot iron is both a friend and an enemy of our work. This paper is also used in the “collage” technique to create individual parts of the quilt, and then make a whole piece from these fragments.
Painter’s tape. I use it very often in various situations. During trimming and sewing, a mess is created around the workplace, i.e. I use the tape to collect a lot of scraps and threads on a regular basis. I wrap a piece of tape around my hands (glue side away from my skin) and dab the “mess” and I can easily pick up loose threads that stick to the tape. It is also helpful for ripping when you need to clean the surface of the fabric from thread remnants. I stick the tape along the ripped part, press it well and tear it off. It is similar to waxing, but it helps. Often when quilting, instead of drawing on the fabric, I mark straight lines using the tape by just simply sticking the tape to the fabric and then sewing along the edge of the tape. The same piece of tape can be used several times.
Utility knife. I like to use it to rip heavy fabrics like denim jeans. Irreplaceable when ripping long seams, like pant legs for example.
Zip lock bags. I use them to store pieces of material, any soft fabric scraps that might come in handy later. I do not have a lot of space in my sewing sanctuary so I stuff all my little treasures into the bags, push the air out, and store the flat bag anywhere I can.
A rice scissors stand. Since we keep our knives in dedicated cupboards in our kitchens, I decided to do the same with my scissors. This is a nice container filled with rice.
Clothespin. I often have the impression that manufacturers of sewing machines did not get along with manufacturers of threads. Here is my patent. I have been sewing like this for several years, so it is proven – I recommend it. The size of the spool does not matter anymore.
A brush used for cleaning dentures 😊. I use it to fray the edges of the fabric if there is a need for it. So far, this is the only use I get out it and it is not needed in the bathroom… yet.
