Starting now, every other week, I will be tormenting you by posting a description of the challenges that our group gets from Kim Lapacek, which you can read about it here.
“In Silhouette” This week’s challenge focuses on contrast and design. Now this might be the shape of a landmark illuminated against a breaking sky or a trace outline of a child’s profile displayed on a wall in the back. But it doesn’t have to be just shadow and darkness. This is, more or less, the content of the challenge. Now I just need an idea and I’ll be ready to go.
It took me a while to come up with something practical and useful. I decided to make a container for all of my cat’s toys. My cat got a lot of toys for Christmas this year, which are now scattered all around the house. It creates chaos and clutter, which I do not like.
This is my first project of this type, so I made many mistakes. It happened that, while working, a lot ofmy ideas did not make sense, but it worked out in the end.
I cut two rectangles and two circles. I added an allowance for seams.
On one rectangle, I used a pencil to draw three cat-like contours and some paws.
I cut along the lines.
I took the black fabric and cut out (with a slight allowance) cat’s silhouettes.
I put it under previously cut cats.
Then I re-cut a few rectangles and circles (minus the extra seams) made of interlining with glue and some stiffener with glue.
I glued it on the fabric with cats.
I sewed around the bays tape, which I strengthened with very light, fusible web.
I put the edge without bays tape next the edge with the one and pressed well.
The bays tape perfectly glued both edges.
I sewed the bottom of the container in.
I decorated cats figures with the basting stitch.
I sewed an extra pouch.
I basted the pouch and sewed onto the previously made container. The purpose of the pouch is to cover all of the stitches inside the container.
The end. My container is ready. Slowly, I will gather all the cat’s toys in it.
