The third challenge of the 14th season of Project Quilting is a block named “54-40 or Fight”. I knew of the block but did not know what it was called. I could only do one small block. I knew I wouldn’t have enough time for a bigger project. It took me some time to find a practical use for it. I decided to sew a pad for a potted plant.
Below is a block I found and used in Electric Quilt 8, which resembles the one that Kim Lapacek put on her website.
I used the PP (Paper Piecing) technique.
To sew this little beauty, I decided to use some fabric scraps I had left over from previous projects.
When everything was ready, I started sewing.
The individual parts were connected, now it was time to sew everything together.
For the back of my project, I used a waterproof fabric. It will protect the cabinet from any spills during watering.
Next, I started to quilt. This time I didn’t use a long-arm and instead opted for a regular sewing machine. However, without the walking foot, the quilting was less than perfect.
Now time for binding and my project is ready.
