A while ago, Sylwia Haluch gave me a beautiful top she had sewn. She named it “Swing Bridge”. She asked me to give it some character by quilting.
This was quite a challenge, because quilting the top can either emphasize or completely spoil the effect of her work. So I had to think carefully about how to approach this task.
Let’s start with the very colorful stripes. I quilted them with circles, meant to symbolize the wheels of bicycles or cars moving along the bridge. To make them perfectly even and smooth, a special ruler had to be used. It was quite time-consuming and required a lot of precision, but I think it was worth the effort. The rings add life and energy to the top.
The next step was to quilt the background, the black fabric that surrounds the colored stripes. I used a dark gray thread to make the quilting subtle and not overpower the main motif.
Here I decided to give vent to my fantasy. I quilted various patterns inspired by bridges – straight and curved lines, waves and spirals, trusses, and nets. I had a lot of fun with it and experimented with different shapes and sizes.
I won’t say everything turned out perfect – I know that I still need to work on quilting with rulers to make everything perfectly even and symmetrical. But I’m still very happy with my job and I hope Sylwia will be too.
