I had been dreaming of a large, comfortable design wall for a long time — a place where I could freely arrange my patchwork blocks, plan compositions, and observe how the colors interact. Eventually, we decided to build one ourselves, and I have to say, the result exceeded my expectations.
We started by buying two OSB boards. My husband screwed them together, creating a stable and rigid base. To this structure, he glued a very hard 3 cm thick styrofoam board using adhesive designed specifically for styrofoam. This made the whole piece lightweight yet resistant to warping.
The next step was preparing the working surface. I applied double‑sided tape to the styrofoam to prevent the fabric from shifting and to help keep it slightly stretched. I must admit, though, that this wasn’t the best idea — whenever I need to use pins, the glue sticks to them and is difficult to clean. If anyone plans to make a similar wall, I definitely wouldn’t recommend this part.
Finally, I added a thicker cotton batting layer, which created the perfect surface for attaching quilt blocks. We hung the finished design wall on the wall, and then framed it with wooden corner trims. They not only created a beautiful frame but also protected the edges from damage.
I’m incredibly happy with it. It’s one of those tools that truly improves the comfort of working — and every time I look at it, it reminds me of the creative project we made together.
